John Sheridan leaves Oldham Athletic for Notts County

Oldham Athletic have confirmed on their club website that John Sheridan has left them to become the new manager of Notts County.

Sheridan had only started his second reign with the Latics earlier in the season after leaving Newport County for them in January. And, as it turns out, his reign with Oldham will be as short as his reign with Newport was after he accepted the job offer to become the Magpies new boss.

The former Plymouth Argyle boss’ second reign was a success after he was able to save Oldham from being relegated to League 2. There were hopes from both the club’s board and fans he would build on this for next season but Sheridan has instead decided that the challenge of trying to get Notts County promoted to League 1 will be better for him. He will take over from Mark Cooper who left the club to become the new manager of Forest Green Rovers.

Revealing his disappointment, Oldham chairman Simon Corney said:

“It is particularly tough for me as John is not only a good manager but also a good friend. There are several reasons behind this move and not all will be apparent to everyone, but John goes with my blessing and eternal thanks for his tremendous effort in keeping us in Division One last season.”

Notts County finished a difficult season in 17th place with 51 points, and winning only 14 games all season.
