Wagstaff departs Bristol City

It has been confirmed on their official club website that Bristol City midfielder Scott Wagstaff will be leaving the club. Following discussions with head coach Lee Johnson, it has been resolved with the 26-year-old searching for a new club.

Ex-Barnsley manager Johnson revealed that he couldn’t guarantee Wagstaff the amount of football which he desired for next season. The former Charlton man has therefore decided to move on after three years with the club.

Wagstaff wanted to pay tribute to the club fans for making him feel so welcome at the football club and providing him with plenty of support during his time at the club,

“The fans have been excellent with me in my time at the club, so I thank them for making me feel so welcome.

“I’m going to miss the staff, at the stadium and the training ground, and of course all the lads. It’s such a great group.

Bristol City is very much a family club and I’ve had an incredible time here.”

Johnson is more than confident that Wagstaff will quickly find himself a new club in the Football League and revealed that there was already interest in the palyer before their recent discussion,

“I felt I would find it difficult to promise him the number of games he wants at this stage of his career. I understand he needs that.

“After that open and honest conversation, we really came to the same conclusion.

“He’s a lovely lad and I didn’t really want to lose him because he’s great around the dressing room – the lads love him.

“He’ll get a club; I’ve already had managers on the phone from League One and League Two clubs and I’m sure there will be interest from the Championship too.

“I want to thank him, on behalf of the club, for being such a great servant during his time here.”

Wagstaff is the highest-profile departure from Ashton Gate this summer so far, but Johnson is hoping to add more to his squad, rather than lose any more players.
