Fulham hope to offload expensive Dutchman

Championship club Fulham are hoping to offload highly paid Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg according to Get West London.

The 33 year old goalkeeper signed for Fulham from Italian giants Roma in June 2013 and signed a four year deal at Craven Cottage for an undisclosed fee but the player has failed to make a real impact in West London.

Stekelenburg has made just 21 appearances for Fulham during his time at the club and his high wages have contributed towards the player being loaned out to Monaco and Southampton in the last two seasons.

Southampton loaned the goalkeeper for the full 2015/2016 season with Stekelenburg making 25 appearances for the South Coast club. It is understood that Fulham are hoping to strike a deal with The Saints to offload the Dutchman. The two clubs could agree a further season long loan which will cover the final year of the player’s deal at Craven Cottage or Fulham could be willing to let Stekelenburg leave for a bargain transfer fee of around £750,000.

Should the two clubs come to an agreement over the player’s future, any move to St Mary’s Stadium would see Stekelenburg provide goalkeeping cover for The Saints’ number one goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

Stekelenburg is believed to earn around £25,000 a week at Fulham and if a move to Southampton does not proceed the player is likely to find himself loaned out to another club next season.
