Wigan join the chase former Leeds striker

Newly-promoted Wigan Athletic are targeting former Leeds frontman Mirco Antenucci, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato.

Released by The Whites following the end of the 2015/16 season, the 31-year-old Italian is currently without a club, and could potentially find himself a home at the DW Stadium.

Antenucci first sprang to prominence in English football after signing a deal with Leeds United, leaving his role as captain at Serie B side Ternana Calcio in the summer of 2014.

The striker netted his first Leeds goal in a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth in September 2014, before scoring his second four days later in a resounding 3-0 win over Huddersfield.

Finishing the 2014/15 season as Leeds’ top scorer in the Championship with 10 goals, the veteran looked to further impress in the 2015/16 season, duly doing so by firing home a spectacular strike in Leeds’ opening fixture of the season against Burnley.

A baron run of scoring form saw Antenucci go four months without finding the net, however a tremendous week in March 2016 saw the Italian score four goals in three consecutive victories for Leeds, firing his side to safety and assuring The Whites of another season in the Championship. In total, Antenucci recorded 19 goals in two seasons at Elland Road.

However, Antenucci announced his intention to leave Leeds via a post on social media at the end of the season, ultimately resulting in the striker being officially released by the club after a two year spell this week.

It appears Antenucci could be remaining in English football however, with newly-promoted Wigan supposedly taking an interest in the striker, as Gary Caldwell’s side look to build on a successful League One campaign that saw them secure the league title.

With the loan deals of strikers Conor McAleny and Haris Vuckic having expired, The Latics will be looking to boost their striking corps, and could see Antenucci as a perfect partner for star striker Will Grigg heading into the coming Championship season.
