Nigel Adkins

New favourite to become Bolton Wanderers manager

Nigel Adkins has emerged as the new favourite to become the manager of Bolton Wanderers. The likes of Peter Reid and current Southend United manager Phil Brown remain in the spotlight as well, but the emergence of Adkins has to be of interest.

The 51-year-old was dismissed from his post as Sheffield United manager a few weeks ago in order to allow Chris Wilder to come in from Northampton Town. He is now searching for his fifth job in management.

Adkins is soon approaching 500 games in management, having held posts at Scunthorpe United, Southampton and Reading prior to his stint at Sheffield United. Although the betting doesn’t always tell the whole story, having Adkins’ name appear rapidly out of the blue has to be taken notice of.

It seemed for a long time that Southend manager Brown would take over. His name was constantly linked to the vacancy and he failed to completely rule himself out of contention whenever give the opportunity to do so. Former Sunderland manager Reid assisted caretaker Jimmy Phillips in the last few games of the season and his name has recently cropped up to become a serious contender.

Other names such as Alan Stubbs and Uwe Rosler were also briefly mentioned as to being linked to the role.

Nevertheless, it is clear that Bolton need an experienced man to give them the best possible chance of an immediate return to the Championship. Adkins and Brown have an advantage in that they managed at League One last season and know what the division is all about. If that gives them the edge or not, we shall see.
