Retained List: Wilder wields the axe at Blades

Chris Wilder has only recently been appointed to the Bramall Lane managerial vacancy but he has been very busy in preparing his squad for next season. Many Blades fans were wondering when their retained list would be named, but that wait is now over.

The ex-Northampton Town boss has made some big decisions in his retained list. A total of ten players have been released following the expiration of their contracts, whilst seven more have been made available for transfer.

In addition to that, midfielder Dean Hammond has activated the option to turn his loan move from Leicester City into a permanent move. However he has instantly be placed on the transfer list by Chris Wilder, along with Kieron Freeman, James Wallace, Keiran Wallace, Paul Coutts, Martyn Woolford and Diego De Girolamo.

Goalkeeper George Long has been offered a new contract. He established himself as the first-choice keeper last season and the highly-rated stopper could be attracting attentions from other clubs. He will have a big decision to make.

As mentioned a total of ten have been released and they are probably headlined by Jay McEveley. He started most of their League One matches last season and the defensive player leaves after two years with the club.

The remaining players have started less than half of their league games this season but have been good servants to the club in previous seasons. Goalkeeper Mark Howard leaves after four seasons, whilst Bob Harris played over 50 games for the club since 2014, but did end the season out on loan at Fleetwood Town.

Jose Baxter has been suspended for a few months now and he hasn’t been offered a contract extension. Ryan Flynn was another player to have been a solid performer in recent times, but didn’t make much of an impact in the season gone by. Rounded up the list of players to be released is Callum McFadzean, Terry Kennedy, Harrison McGahey, Florent Cuvelier and Jamal Campbell-Ryce.
