Retained List: Rotherham allow experienced pros to go

It has certainly been a hectic week at the New York Stadium. Neil Warnock decided against renewing his Rotherham United contract and subsequently left the club. Today, they have unveiled their retained list as they make preparations for next season.

A total of 11 players have been allowed to leave the club, but there are no major surprises in who has been let go. However, most of them are experienced professionals who will attract attentions from many other clubs.

In the eyes of Rotherham fans, it is the release of goalkeeper Adam Collin which touches a sentimental value for them. He exits after spending three years with the club and played a major hand (literally) in their promotion into the Championship. However he hasn’t played in the Millers first-team for a little while now.

Ex-Leeds defender Frazer Richardson also moves on. He enjoyed a decent amount of football at times, but consistent starts proved a problem for him. In two seasons, he made 43 appearances but has been allowed to seek regular first-team football elsewhere. Paul Green also spent two years with the Millers but he too has been allowed to move on.

Experienced defenders Lewis Buxton and Danny Collins depart after a full season with the club. They started the season in the team and enjoyed a regular run of matches, but the changes of management didn’t do them any favours in terms of staying in the side.

Emmanuel Ledesma, Alex Cairns, Paddy Kenny, Jerome Thomas, Luciano Becchio and Lloyd Doyley complete the list of those free to leave the club.

The club remain in talks with five players in the hope of extending their stays at the New York Stadium. Those players are Kirk Broadfoot, Matt Derbyshire, Richard Wood, Leon Best and Stephen Kelly.
