Leeds United: a mixed season – review

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us.”

Those are the words of Charles Dickens and the opening to his novel ‘Tale of Two Cities’, however he could very well have been a Leeds United fan had he written that tale in 2016.

Leeds’ 2015/16 Championship campaign was all of the things that Dickens wrote about. There were times that Leeds fans felt the best of times, such as beating Derby County at the iPro, but there were also the worst of times when Brighton obliterated the Whites in a four-goal, 20-minute salvo at the Amex Stadium.

United fans travelled in their 1000s to games glowing with the feelings that it was an epoch of belief, only to see a display so abject that they witnessed incredulity the likes of which saw them undone at home in a suicidal eight-minute spell against local rivals Huddersfield Town at Elland Road.

We felt the spring of hope as a series of draws and a sprinkling of wins gave us an unbeaten start to the season before Leeds United reality kicked in and we felt a winter of despair.

As the 46th game of the season ebbed away, as Leeds eked out that final point against Preston North End, Whites fans realised that was it for 2015/16 and that there really was nothing before us until 2016/17 began in August.

So, yes, watch the above TV Yorkshire video and remember one thing – Charles Dickens was a Leeds fan…probably.
