Retained List: Four depart Northampton

Rob Page may have only been in the job for no more than a day, but the club have issued their retained list. He didn’t have a great deal of say in it however, and a total of four players have been allowed to exit Sixfields for the final time.

A total of two, one first-teamer and one academy player, have been issued new contracts and the club await their response.

Danny Rose has been offered new terms. He only joined the club a few months ago after leaving Oxford United in February by mutual consent. He enjoyed a run of games towards the end of the season.

Youngsters Shaun McWilliams has been offered a two-year professional deal. The 17-year-old midfielder has been with the club for three years and appeared on the bench in the first-team earlier in the season.

Evan Horwood leaves after failing to make a single appearance for the Cobblers in Chris Wilder’s title-winning team, however he ended the season winning promotion via the play-offs with Grimsby Town. Josh Lelan leaves after starting just ten League Two games this season. The former Derby youngster struggled to command a regular place since joining in 2015. The same applies to Paul Corry who has also been allowed to leave. He failed to start a league game last season. Chris Hackett spent time out on loan at Barnet but injury cut short his season. He has not been offered a new contract.

Speaking on news of the retained list to the clubs YouTube channel, Page confirmed that he didn’t have too much influence on deciding who stayed and left,

“Not a lot (of influence). I’ve only been in the building for 24 hours and it would be unfair for me to cast my judgement on some of the players.

“I’ve had a lot of guidance from the chairman. There is not a lot wrong with the squad. It’s about sprinkling a bit of quality and helping us improve on what they did last year.”
