Sevilla beat Liverpool 3-1 in last night’s Europa League final and in doing so captured the trophy for a third successive year. However, helping them achieve this was ex-Reading FC defender Daniel Carriço.
Carriço signed for Reading from Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon in 2013 for a fee of around £560,000, when his market value was reported by website Transfermarkt to be £5.25m.
However, the Portuguese defender only made three appearances for the Berkshire-based club under then manager Brian McDermott, before leaving on a season-long loan to Sevilla mid-July 2013.
The La Liga side paid a loan fee to cover the transfer fee that Reading paid Sporting Lisbon, Carriço going on to make 22 appearances whilst on loan to Sevilla, scoring two goals over the 2013/14 season.
Reading’s official website announced on June 23 2014 that the defender had made a permanent move to the Spanish side, for a fee believed to be in the region of £1.5m, with then Director of Football Nick Hammond saying:
“We would like to wish Daniel all the very best. It’s a good deal for him and for Reading Football Club.
“He joined us last year at a difficult time for the team and when he was not up to full match fitness, but has gone to Spanish football which has been a great fit for him and has done exceptionally well.
“He’s a fantastic individual, and we wish him all the best at Sevilla.”
