Boro will spend every penny they’ve got says Steve Gibson

Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson has stated that every available penny will be used to improve the squad over the summer to give the Teessiders the best possible chance of Premier League survival according to Gazette Live.

Boro held their nerve on the final day of the Championship season to secure promotion back to the top flight when they avoided defeat against promotion rivals Brighton & Hove Albion at The Riverside stadium.

Promotion to the Premier League is now thought to be worth over £170 million and while some improvements must be made to The Riverside Stadium over the summer to prepare Boro’s home for top flight football next season, chairman Steve Gibson has promised that every other penny available in the club’s budget will be used to improve the squad.

“We are a club with no debt, we own the stadium and we own the training ground” Gibson told Gazette Live. “We’ll have to make some investment in the stadium, a lot has changed in the seven years we have been out of the Premier League.”

“So there will be a small investment in that, but other than that every penny we’ve got will be to improve the squad.”

Middlesbrough last played in the Premier League back in 2009 and excitement is building on Teesside ahead of the club’s first season back in the top flight. Fans will learn who their side will face on the opening day of the season when the Premier League fixtures are released on Wednesday 15 June.
