Bristol City set to approach Colchester United youngster

Bristol City could be set to offer a contract to Colchester United midfielder Alex Gilbey after the player rejected a deal to remain at the Weston Homes Community Stadium according to the Bristol Post.

Colchester United’s Player of the Year is out of contract this summer and is almost certain to now leave the club with Bristol City previously said to be interested in the player.

The Robins were reported to have made a transfer bid for Gilbey during the January transfer window but Colchester United labelled the offer as ‘a joke’ and rejected the bid. With the midfielder now set to become a free agent, Bristol City could make a further move for the player and land the youngster on a Bosman free transfer.

The 21 year old Dagenham born midfielder has made 42 appearances for Colchester United this season and scored five goals as the club were relegated to League 2. Gilbey is a product of The U’s academy set up and has made 121 appearances for the club and has scored eight goals since breaking into the first team back in October 2012.

Gilbey’s good performances this season have been recognised at his club’s end of season awards ceremony and the player is expected to be the subject of plenty of demand over the summer.
