Retained List: Pompey transfer list three and three more released

A few days after their play-off semi-final defeat to Plymouth Argyle, Portsmouth have today revealed their retained list as they make preparations for next season. Manager Paul Cook conceded that the job is a ‘bigger challenge’ than he thought, so will be even more determined to make next season a successful one.

Three players have been released after the club elected not to extend their deals, whilst a further three have been placed on the transfer list. Three more players will stay after options were taken up with them, and talks continue with two more in the hope of extending their respective contracts.

Experienced goalkeeper Brian Murphy headlines those to leave the club. He signed on a one-year contract in August when the club had a goalkeeping shortage. The Irishman went on to start 20 League Two games this season, but since January he only started three more league games. Youngsters Chad Field and Snorre Nilsen also both leaving having failed to make an impact on the first-team scene.

Ben Davies started all bar three of Portsmouth’s matches this season and the experienced right back is clearly an important player in Cook’s side. He is naturally a midfielder by trade, so offers plenty from an attacking perspective. The former Notts County, Sheffield United and Shrewsbury Town man is looking to stay with the club.

The same applies to ex-Bournemouth midfielder Danny Hollands. Since joining in May 2014, the 30-year-old has had a certain role to play in the Pompey squad. He has had his injury problems, restricting his appearances, but when he does perform he tends to have a major influence.

Adam McGurk, who was a regular substitute, Kal Naismith, who only started ten league games, and Matt Tubbs, who is out on loan at Eastleigh, have all been made available for transfer by former Chesterfield manager Cook.

Ben Close and Ben Tollitt, who enjoyed a decent amount of first-team action considering their age and experience, have both signed one year contracts. As has Adam May, who made one sub appearance in the league this season.

The following players are still under contract at Fratton Park next season:

Adam Barton, Kyle Bennett, Christian Burgess, Conor Chaplin, Michael Doyle, Gareth Evans, Brandon Haunstrup, Paul Jones, Gary Roberts, Enda Stevens, Adam Webster and Jack Whatmough.
