Sheff Utd unveil Wilder and Knill management team

Sheffield United have confirmed the appointment of Chris Wilder as their new manager. He leaves his role at Northampton Town, along with assistant Alan Knill, and both sign three-year contracts at Bramall Lane.

It caps off an eventful day at Bramall Lane after Nigel Adkins was sacked from his role this morning. It marks an emotional return to the club for the Stocksbridge-born man, who started his playing career with the Blades.

It also rounds off quite a remarkable season for Wilder and Knill individual. The pair guided Northampton Town to what turned out to be a comfortable League Two title, finishing 13 points clear of second-placed Oxford United.

Although he will be officially unveiled on Friday, Wilder offered his initial thoughts on returning to the club, this time as manager,

“A lot of supporters already know me and those who don’t will soon realise that I am loyal, hard-working, straight-talking, thorough and whole-hearted in everything I do.

“Obviously, people know me from my connection with the club as a supporter and former player and I want Bramall Lane to be an intimidating place – I don’t want the players to feel it is a burden, playing in front of 20,000 fans.

“I understand the club, not just the playing side, but from the board to the Academy, including the key personnel such as Travis Binnion, John Dungworth and Mick Wadsworth, who have all enjoyed success this season.”

Chairman Kevin McCabe also gave his thoughts on the swift appointment, revealing his delight at appointing their number one managerial target,

“We are delighted to appoint Chris, he has a fantastic reputation. He understands the ethos of our club and is a modern 21st century manager.

“We are aware Chris is popular with the supporters, however, this is not a sentimental appointment, he has a proven track record and is hungry to bring success to the Blades.

“He has a vision of success, knows what is required by the supporters and we will assist him as much as we can. Early talks have been positive and we look forward to a new era at Bramall Lane.”

Wilder’s first target will certainly be to get the club back into the Championship as early as possible. He will be facing former club Northampton next season, after their promotion this season. It is certainly an exciting part in the history of Sheffield United and one which they hope leads to success.
