Caretaker and coach Williams leaves Nottingham Forest

It has been confirmed that Nottingham Forest caretaker manager and first-team coach Paul Williams has left the club. He took charge of the final ten matches of the season after Dougie Freedman left the club in March.

Several names have been linked to becoming the permanent successor to Freedman, and Williams was very much only expected to be ‘keeping the seat warm’ until a new man was brought in.

Williams, a former central defender for Coventry City and Derby County, was originally brought into the club in December last year.

Speaking after the news of his departure with the official club website, Williams firstly wanted to thank the Nottingham Forest fans for the support they provided him during his time at the City Ground,

‘I would like to thank the fans for all their support since I took charge.

‘Although we struggled with results at first, I felt our performances were strong and the lads gave me everything they had.

‘They, along with the staff, are a good honest group and I will always appreciate the commitment and desire shown during my time here.

‘This club has so much potential and when you see the backing the club receives from the supporters both home and away I truly hope they are rewarded for their loyalty with success on the pitch.’

At one stage it seemed inevitable that Gus Poyet would be the new manager, but he has since been appointed by La Liga side Real Betis. At the point of writing, the bookies favourite to take charge of the first game of next season is current Leeds United head coach Steve Evans. Other names in the reckoning include Martin O’Neill, the current Republic of Ireland manager and former European Cup winner with Forest.
