Former Brighton & Hove Albion manager Sami Hyypia has left his role as manager of Swiss Super League side FC Zurich by mutual consent. Wednesday’s night 4-0 home defeat to fellow strugglers Lugano left the 12-time champions bottom of the table with just three games remaining.
After taking charge in August 2015, he began his third job in management since retiring from playing. Before his time at the Amex Stadium, he was on the coaching staff at Bayer Leverkusen, before eventually being appointed manager in May 2012 until April 2014.
The 42-year-old, who won two FA Cups, two League Cups, one UEFA Cup and one Champions League titles during his playing days with Liverpool, only endured 26 matches during his time in the Football League with the Seagulls. He elected to resign following a 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers, meaning it was only one victory in their last 18 at the time.
He also achieved over 100 caps for his native Finland, before becoming their assistant head coach prior to stepping into club management. It now leaves Hyypia in something of a football manager limbo, given that he has yet to really stamp his authority since his Leverkusen days. During his time in Germany, he guided the club to a fourth place finish when he was in sole charge.
Perhaps Hyypia will want to come back to England and search for management and even coaching. He was rumoured to return to Liverpool in a coaching capacity around the time that Jurgen Klopp was appointed earlier this season.
