Quique Sanchez Flores

Cellino targets Leeds move for Premier League manager

The Daily Star understands that Massimo Cellino’s number one managerial appointment choice for Leeds United next season is current Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores. The future of the former Valencia coach however is up in the air, with it being unclear if he’ll remain at Vicarage Road next season.

With it looking increasingly likely that Steve Evans is set to exit Elland Road in the coming weeks, Cellino is planning for the future and has identified his preferred option.

Current Oldham Athletic manager John Sheridan has also been strongly linked to the post, but Cellino recently revealed that he was unaware of this link and wasn’t completely sure on who former Leeds legend Sheridan actually was.

It is understood that the Pozza family, who own the Premier League club and FA Cup semi-finalists are looking to make a managerial change despite comfortably avoiding relegation in their year first back in the top flight after a lengthy absence.

The fact that Flores has taken to English football so well means that he could be open to staying, even at a league lower. However the confusion around Elland Road at present and the obvious ownership situation is one possible stumbling block however.

A source to the Daily Star revealed that Leeds players haven’t been able to book summer holidays as they’ve been told next to nothing about the clubs pre-season preparations. They have been told to await a text message revealing such details, and about any potential managerial change.

Flores, who played for Real Madrid, can count upon clubs such as Benfica and Atletico Madrid on his managerial CV. When speaking to Sky Sports following the defeat at Norwich City in midweek, he was non-committal over his future at the club.
