Vincent Tan

5 candidates to be the next Cardiff City manager

There has actually been some praise heading in the direction of Vincent Tan in the past few days, which may surprise many! Russell Slade was told that he won’t be manager next season, but he has been kept on in a Head of Football role. Experienced Slade knows the Football League, so would appear to be suited to that vacancy.

However that of course opens up the door for a lucrative job in the Championship. The Bluebirds only just narrowly missed out on a play-off place, so the foundations are there to be built upon.

But who will be the next Cardiff City manager I hear you ask? Well, whilst we don’t have any insider info, we have looked at five quite likely candidates who could get an interview or will have serious interest in taking on the role.

Craig Bellamy

It is no secret that this is a job that Craig Bellamy would love to have one day. He applied for the role in the past and you can bet your bottom dollar that he’ll be handing in his CV once more. Cardiff City is Craig Bellamy’s club. Simple as that. In quite an eventful playing career he spent two spells with the South Wales club. He went on to end his career with the Bluebirds too. His affinity and admiration for the club cannot and will not be in question.

He hasn’t tasted football management since he retired, but he has been a part of the academy at the Cardiff City Stadium, working with the youngsters as a coach. He has been doing his coaching badges over the years in preparation for taking on a job. Would it be ‘fair’ to him to jump into a Championship job with no managerial experience? Some would argue know. The only reason he is the favourite and is really in consideration for the job is because of his connection with the club. Nevertheless, he is an intriguing candidate.

Of course, all manager’s have to start somewhere in their careers. Why not at Cardiff City? He would certainly get a ‘honeymoon period’ in the role, perhaps longer than if someone else took over. It is clearly a big decision that Vincent Tan and the Cardiff hierarchy has to make. Perhaps Russell Slade will have a say in the appointment too, but Bellamy will come under consideration for sure. The question is if they want to take the risk.
