Jack Payne

Championship trio and Dutch club chase Southend starlet

Echo News understands that highly-rated Southend United forward Jack Payne is attracting interest from clubs in the Sky Bet Championship. In addition to those three clubs, a newly-promoted Dutch club are also interested in the 21-year-old.

Payne has scored 17 goals for the Shrimpers but with his contract coming to an end and unlikely to agree an extension, his time at Roots Hall is coming to an end.

Sparta Rotterdam will be playing against the likes of Ajax and PSV Eindhoven in Holland next season after cruising to the second-tier title this season. They hope to add Payne to their squad.

The product of the Southend United youth system is also an admirer of Mick McCarthy, David Wagner and Kenny Jackett too, who all hope to add him to their squads at Ipswich Town, Huddersfield Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers respectively.

It was only a few days ago that manager Phil Brown admitted to Echo News that he has all but resigned himself to losing Payne over the summer, as well as talented goalkeeper Dan Bentley. Brown’s own future has been up in the air as well, with him being heavily linked to the vacancy at former club Bolton Wanderers, who will also be playing in League One next season.

Payne, who has excelled in an attacking midfielder role, was always going to be the subject of interest over the summer. With Southend’s play-off charge ending a few weeks ago, there was always the risks that the Essex-based club were always going to lose some of their key players.
