As we hurtle towards the off season, it is traditionally a time when fans become excited at the prospect of seeing a world beater hold aloft the club scarf in front of the cameras and sign on the dotted line ready to become a fans favourite.
Yes, it’s the summer transfer window. Rumours, whispers, sightings and speculative guesses are all part and parcel of the most eagerly anticipated period for fans who are desperate to see their team improved whether it’s a star from abroad or a young talent tipped for the top. But who has the financial clout to compete at Championship level?
Well, here we have 5 top footballers who wont cost anything in transfer fees as their contract is up in the summer and they may just be tempted to play for a Championship club
1. James Morrison – West Brom
The 29 year old Scottish international midfielder has played 254 games for the Baggies scoring 28 goals. He has plenty of experience too, having played for Middlesbrough during their successful Uefa cup campaign reaching the final. Assured on the ball and not averse to cracking in goals from outside the box, Morrison would surely be a good acquisition for any club. His contract talks continue to rumble on as he nears his recovery from injury.
2.Ron Vlaar – AZ Alkmaar
It’s not too long back that Ron Vlaar was attracting Man Utd and Arsenal whilst playing for Aston Villa but following snubs from Premier league teams he returned to the Netherlands to play for AZ Alkmaar. His contract runs out at the end of June and surely at 31 he still has plenty to offer. He was one of the standout performers for Holland during their World Cup campaign in 2014, leading their defensive impressively. A big strong, no nonsense centre back who might just be on the radar of some of the championships finest.
3.Gaston Ramirez – Southampton (loan – Middlesbrough)
Ramirez has enjoyed a fantastic run of form for Middlesbrough since arriving in January, he will almost certainly move on from Southampton after having been told by Ronald Koeman he has no future at St Mary’s. He also enjoyed a loan spell at Hull City but didn’t reach the heights he has at Boro and was often employed on the flank as opposed to the free number 10 role he has occupied at boro. He is regarded as one of the best attacking players in the division and all clubs will be watching closely for developments.
4.Stephane Sessegnon – West Brom
Sessegnon is a player capable of the out of the ordinary, he can go past a player, he can score goals. Sometimes a question against his consistency levels but there will be Championship teams who see his match winning ability and undoubted premier league experience.
He has played for Sunderland after arriving from PSG and scored 17 times for the black cats. He has played 75 times for West Brom scoring 9 times.
The midfielder has yet to sign a new contract which will alert teams in the summer who wish to add some pace and guile to their attack.
5.Junior Hoilett – QPR
With the QPR midfielder reportedly on somewhere in the region of £40,000 per week it seems QPR are looking to offload the Canadian. It has been reported that some European teams have been tracking him and if he could recapture some of the promise shown at Blackburn he would be a useful addition for a Chapionship team provided they could agree a package in terms of wages. The Canadian international has featured 5 times for his country and whilst with Blackburn knocked in 12 goals during his 81 appearances. He has also scored 12 times for QPR in 112 appearances.
