5 candidates for the Blackburn Rovers job

Martin O’Neill

There has been plenty of talk surrounding the future of Martin O’Neill in terms of what dugout he will be in next season. The current Republic of Ireland boss will enjoy the European Championships in France this summer, but he could be itching to get back into club management. He is someone who will attract plenty of attention, with the Nottingham Forest vacancy being one he is also constantly linked with.

He is the fourth favourite to be given the job, but he could have his sights set on a Premier League job, or maybe even the Forest gig. Would he entertain working with the Venky’s? Perhaps not. The ownership situation does make this a difficult job to naturally assign to someone, especially as O’Neill will have dealt with his fair share of chairmen over the years.

His record in management is decent, albeit not necessarily at Championship level. He may feel he has a bit of a point to prove after he was sacked by Sunderland, his last club job, in 2013. Maybe stepping into the Championship is his only realistic route back into club management in the UK. The Celtic job is also available however….

Nevertheless, he is a well respected individual in the game and players naturally would want to play for him. He could attract players to Blackburn that perhaps Paul Lambert or others in the past couldn’t necessarily achieve. Finances will dictate a lot of that as well, but O’Neill is a very good football manager. It is a job he would perhaps like to get involved with if given the chance, but only on his terms.
