Accrington Stanley will be fighting to retain second place in League 2 when they face National League bound York City at The Wham Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Stanley’s 2-1 victory at Hartlepool United on Tuesday evening combined with draws for promotion rivals Oxford United and Bristol Rovers saw the famous little Lancashire club climb into a strong position in the automatic promotion places with just three matches remaining.

John Coleman’s side go into the clash with The Minstermen without former York City promotion winner Scott Brown who has a hamstring injury while defender Dean Winnard and influential midfielder Matt Crooks continue to be sidelined as they nurse ankle injuries. Defender Joe Wright could return after recovering from a knee injury.

York City travel to Lancashire knowing that they will finally be relegated if they fail to beat Accrington Stanley or if Newport County avoid defeat at Luton Town. The Minstermen welcome back centre half Dave Winfield after serving a suspension but he may be kept out of the side by Scot Bennett and Kyle Cameron.

Left back Femi Ilesanmi could return to the squad but may not be selected after Josh Carson’s solid performance in his absence in Tuesday evening’s 3-1 home victory over Portsmouth. Strikers Jake Hyde and Michael Coulson are again unlikely to feature as they continue to nurse groin injuries.

York City will be looking to record a first victory on the road since early September when they secured a 3-0 victory at Newport County.
