Rochdale midfielder left surprised by stadium announcement

Rochdale’s Callum Camps opened the scoring for the hosts, against Gillingham, after getting help with his car midway through the first half.

The 20-year-old’s first-half stoppage time strike gave the hosts the lead, but initially had to attend to a bizarre issue.

A first-half announcement from the stadium announcer read out the number plate of a car that had left its lights on – expecting it to be a fan attending the game – only to find out it was Dale midfielder Camps.

“I was listening because the ball was out of play, and as soon as I heard the reg I was thinking that’s my number plate,” Camps told BBC Radio Manchester.

“I thought I’d blocked someone in, so I said to [team-mate] Jamie Allen: ‘That’s my car that’ and he said: ‘What?’ I said again: ‘That’s my car they’ve just called out.’

“I looked over to [head of sports science] Kevin Gibbins and said: ‘My car’s just been read out, can you sort it out?'”

Unfortunately for Camps, his first-half strike wasn’t enough to secure the points, as the Gills John Egan scored in the 77th-minute, to earn his side a point and remain in the play-off places on goal difference.
