AFC Wimbledon ask fans to support stadium bid

AFC Wimbledon chairman Erik Samuelson has made a plea to supporters to provide further backing for the club’s move to a new stadium according to Get West London.

The Wombles have ambitious plans to finally return home to a new 11,000 capacity all seater stadium close to their former Plough Lane ground on the site of the current Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium.

Merton Borough Council gave the project the green light in December after approving the club’s initial plans but AFC Wimbledon’s relocation hopes took a twist last month when Mayor of London Boris Johnson called in the stadium plans. A Mayoral election is due to take place on 5 May leaving The Wombles’ future plans in limbo.

The plans are likely to now be considered by either Labour candidate Sadiq Khan or Tory hopeful Zac Goldsmith. AFC Wimbledon are anticipating that the final decision will not be unanimous and are urging fans to help back their campaign for the move back to the London Borough of Merton.

Dons chairman Erik Samuelson has requested that fans E-mail the prospective Mayor of London candidates giving their support to the stadium project. While Samuelson has admitted that the final decision is out of the club’s hands, he has insisted that every single vote of support counts with the club looking to build on their Football League stability since their promotion in 2011.

The elections candidates’ email addresses are London@labour.org.uk (Sadiq Khan) and zac@backzac2016.com (Zac Goldsmith).
