There always seems to be a certain beauty to a left-footed player. Statistically there are probably more right-footers than ‘lefties’ so picking left sided players is never that straightforward.

In the Sky Bet Championship, there is an abundance of talent in the left back area. There are the usual candidates playing for teams in the top spots, but there are a couple lower down the table that could easily play in the Premier League.

Therefore, we take a look at our view on the top five left backs in the Sky Bet Championship. We appreciate every supporter will have a different view, so please feel free to let us know your thoughts in the comment section below, or via one of one social media outlets.

George Friend (Middlesbrough)

When you mention the phrases ‘left back’ and ‘Championship’, a large percentage of football supporters will look in the direction of Middlesbrough’s George Friend. There is no doubt he is a player of vast quality, but so much nowadays a full back is often judged on what he offers in attack, and not just defence.

Since joining from Doncaster Rovers in 2012, Friend has really made this position his own. Several has attempted to contest this position, but he continues to stand up ahead of the competition. He certainly deserves a crack at the Premier League, where his defensive qualities will perhaps be tested that bit more. It may surprise many to know he is 28 and has been a professional for ten years now.

He is perhaps seen to best effect in home matches when Middlesbrough enjoy more of the possession and more onus is on them to take the game to their opponents. Away from home we see him showcase plenty of strong defensive work, especially later in games when his side are usually protecting a slender lead.

Another slightly surprising fact is that he has scored just once this season and assisted only two more (source: WhoScored) but offensive play cannot purely be judged on goals and assists. He looks after the ball better than most and can run with the ball and take players on down the left side. He is certainly one of the most effective left backs at this level.
