Leeds United: Haigh, GFH and the email stories

The strange case of the Troubling Memo.

In this memo from Hisham Alreyes, the MD of GFH Capital, a series of criteria are put forward for the consideration of then Leeds United manager Brian McDermott. Amongst these criteria are the following:

  • immediate improvement against Leicester City (Leeds lost 1-0 at home)
  • the need to put in a detailed 7-game timeline of poor performances dating back for “the least [last] 7 games” (Leeds had just lost 6-0 to Sheffield Wednesday, 2-1 to Blackburn before that.)
  • the need to put forward a dossier in advance of every subsequent game for consideration of GFH and non-footballing staff such as the club chairman
  • a post game report for every game focussing on performance, player assessment and forward planning.

Alreyes was urged not to send this memo to Brian McDermott, in order that the then-Leeds manager was “to take the points raised in this Memo seriously,” but as O’Rourke states – Alreyes sent the memo onwards anyway.
