Middlesbrough moved to within one point of Championship leaders Burnley with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Huddersfield Town at The Riverside Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Middlesbrough went into the match knowing that they could return to the Championship summit should Burnley lose at home to Cardiff City and should their four better goal difference reduce but Boro will have to wait for their chance to reclaim top spot after The Clarets’ secured a goalless draw in Lancashire.
The Teessiders opened the scoring at The Riverside Stadium in the 32nd minute when Boro were awarded a penalty by match referee Steve Martin after Gaston Ramirez was fouled in the area by Joel Lynch. Midfielder Grant Leadbitter stepped up to take the spot kick and slotted away the penalty to put the home side 1-0 up.
Just a minute later Boro were in complete control when Gaston Ramirez rounded Terriers keeper Jed Steer to fire the home side into a two goal lead.
Huddersfield Town had more than their fair share of possession but could not make their chances count against a defensively astute Boro outfit and the home side added a third when Gaston Ramirez curled in a sublime free kick late on to notch his second goal of the match.
Middlesbrough now face a crucial home match against Preston North End on Saturday while Huddersfield Town face promotion chasing Hull City at The John Smith’s Stadium.
