Arsenal to edge out Spurs and United in striker chase

When Premier League giants cast their eyes on a promising player, things often don’t look good for lower division teams. Like vultures circling a carcass, it is only a matter of time before the inevitable.

The inevitable is seemingly about to happen to Charlton Athletic, according to website Read Arsenal quoting a report on Italian website TUTTOmercatoWEB regarding the Addicks promising striker Ademola Lookman; the Italian website saying, “Ademola Lookman would be very close to signing for Arsenal.”

18-year-old Wandsworth-born centre forward Lookman has featured in 16 games for Charlton this season, scoring four times – including a brace against Bolton in a December 2-2 draw. The youngster, an ex-Waterloo FC youth player who signed for Charlton in 2014, has seen a meteoric rise through the Charlton ranks and it is this rising potential that has reportedly led many Premier League teams, including Arsenal, to enter into a race for his signature.

Arsenal have reportedly been interested in the talented forward for a while and any bid to further secure his Charlton future, Lookman having only signed a contract extension to June 2020 in January, will likely struggle in the face of such interest from higher-tier, higher-profile clubs.

When Premier League teams like Arsenal et al come a-calling, the power of the cheque book is something that often sways the hardiest of clubs and tests the resolve of the strongest of club wills.
