Four Football League managers who could survive in the Prem

The Football League boasts an array of excellent managers, both ex Prem and those who have never managed at the top level.

In this piece, we take a look at those who we think are capable of managing in the top tier of English Football:

Gary Rowett – Birmingham: The current Birmingham boss is one of the most promising young English managers in the game at this current moment. He worked wonders at his previous club Burton Albion to put them in poll position to eventually earn promotion to League One, and he has continued his success with Birmingham City. The season he took over at The Blues followed their escape from relegation with a 2-2 draw at Bolton on the final day, and the club have come a long way since then. The former Premiership defender has done a good job to turn Birmingham into a top half Championship club, and has even been linked with the Derby job in recent months.

Simon Grayson – Preston: Simon Grayson has three League One promotions to his name, and has proved this season he’s got what it takes to maintain a Championship club. He has earned promotion with Leeds United, Huddersfield and most recently Preston, and has seen his Preston side this season defy the odds and reach the top half of the Championship table. It may be argued that his success has only been at a lower level, but the consistency which it has come at stakes a claim that it could be replicated at the top level.

Sean Dyche – Burnley: As a former Premiership manager, Sean Dyche certainly knows what it takes to get to the top flight. The ginger Mourinho did a fantastic job in getting Burnley into the Premiership in the first place, and was unfortunate to see his side get relegated. The Lancashire club are again in poll position to reach the top flight, and it might not be long before we see Dyche parading the touchline at some of the top grounds in the country. Working on a small budget but still competing at the top of the Championship is an impressive achievement, and demonstrates Dyche’s ability as a manager.

Nigel Clough – Burton: Attempting to follow in the footsteps of his late father, Nigel Clough is slowly working his way up the football league. His Burton side currently sit in 1st place in the League One table, six points clear. He’s previously managed Sheffield United, showing he has the capacity to handle the pressure at bigger clubs. The fact that he’s taken Burton to the brink of the Championship demonstrates how good of a manager he is, and should he survive with the Midlands club in the second tier next season, he certainly might attract attention from top flight clubs.
