Birmingham sign oft-mentioned Leeds target

Whenever the name ‘Kyle Lafferty’ was mentioned in the press, it was usually quickly followed by the term ‘Leeds United’ with the Whites being perenially linked with the Northern Ireland frontman.

However, the 28-year-old Norwich forward, who is looking to play in this summer’s Euro Championships, has signed on loan for Birmingham City (below) until May 31.

Lafferty is something of a forgotten man at Carrow Road where the Northern Ireland front man has only a single 13 minute Premier League appearance against his name this term for the Canaries. He joins a play-off chasing Blues side who will be hopeful that they can overhaul the six point defecit that is keeping them from the final play-off place in the Championship table.

Birmingham will be looking to 6ft 4in striker Lafferty’s international prowess to rub off on them and their attempt to hit the play-offs, the Northern Ireland international having scored 16 goals in his 45 caps for his country.

Only as recently as the beginning of February were Leeds seen as serious contenders for his signature with the Yorkshire Evening Post reporting that the Elland Road outfit “have kept alive their interest in the Norwich City striker and hope to take him on a 93-day loan;” all this despite losing out on his signature during the FIFA January window. However, Leeds’ interest cooled with head coach Steve Evans thought to not be interested in training up another team’s player for the Euros.

Lafferty is currently with the Northern Ireland squad ahead of two friendlies against Wales and Slovenia and will sport the #25 shirt on his return to St Andrews.
