Barnsley re-sign Newcastle striker for second time

Barnsley have today confirmed they have re-signed Newcastle United striker Ivan Toney on loan for the remainder of the campaign. The youngster impressed in a loan spell at Oakwell earlier this season, scoring two goals in eight matches.

Caretaker manager Paul Heckingbottom has snapped up the chance to bring him back to the club after Lee Johnson originally signed him earlier this season. Since returning to St James’ Park, Toney participated four times for the Magpies in league and cup.

The 20-year-old earned his move to the Premier League side after his displays with Northampton Town did not go unnoticed. Although he hasn’t made a massive impression on the first-team setup just yet, he is clearly seen as a player for the future, plus the managerial changes haven’t necessarily helped his cause either.

Nevertheless, this is to the advantage of Barnsley, who will now use Toney to boost their quest to make the League One play-offs, whilst they have a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy cup final at Wembley to look forward to in the near future. Heckingbottom is delighted that a deal to bring Toney back to the club has been agreed,

“We’re delighted to have someone of Ivan’s calibre back for the remainder of the season. Having worked with him earlier in the season we know what he’s all about and the strengths that he can bring to the squad. Ivan knows us well, he’s familiar with the surroundings and he knows a lot of lads, so he’ll be able to slot straight back in and carry on where he left off in December.
“As we have seen previously, his pace and power can cause the opposition huge problems and I’m sure he’ll be a big asset for the remainder of the season. He’s recently returned from injury with Newcastle and we have to be mindful of that, but physically he’s in great condition and ready to go.”
The player himself said it was a no-brainer to return to the South Yorkshire club and the fact he won’t necessarily need a settling in period, as he is used to the club, could work in his favour,
“It’s great to be coming back into a strong side who are we’re flying at the moment, so hopefully I can bring something extra to the team and keep them going forward. From my first spell here I know the surroundings and the area really well, so this helps me to settle back in and hit the ground running.
It’s feels great that Paul and Tommy wanted me back here and I’m delighted to return, so I just can’t wait to get some goals and repay them and the fans.
“The fans were brilliant with me when I was here before, so I’m going to be working hard to repay them, give them 100% in every game and continue what is turning into a great season for the Club.”
Toney will be hoping to make his second Tykes debut on Good Friday when they welcome a Scunthorpe United side under new management to Oakwell. Ex-Fleetwood Town manager Graham Alexander was appointed to the post earlier this week.
