Uruguayan striker swaps Everton for Brentford

Brentford have acted quickly to try and bolster their squad by securing the loan signing of promising Everton striker Leandro Rodriguez. He moves to Griffin Park initially until 14 April 2016 and is in line to make his debut against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

The Bees are on a terrible run of form, losing their last three straight matches and winning only once in their last eight games as well. On a bigger scale, they have only won twice since the turn of the year, losing ten of their previous 13 in league and cup. With that being the case, Dean Smith has been changing his starting line-up on a regular basis, especially the lone striker role. Against Queens Park Rangers at the weekend, he elected to start without a recognised forward. Marco Djuricin, Phillips Hoffmann and Lasse Vibe have all been rotated in that position.

With signing of Rodriguez doesn’t necessarily mean he is going to walk straight into the team according to Smith, but insists that he is joining at a good time,

“Leandro comes highly recommended and arrives at a good time for us. It is nice to be able to bring in a player on loan and we are thankful that Everton have allowed him to come. He trains with their First Team every day and is very highly thought of. We do not want to put too much pressure on him but he will give us a lift and we believe he can help us to end our current run of form.”
Rodriguez moved to Merseyside in August 2015 after impressing in his native Uruguay with Rival Plate Montevideo. He insists he cannot wait to get back playing competitive football once again and says that Brentford can help bring the best out of him,
“I am very happy to be here. Without doubt, it is a good club to be at to play football and hopefully get some good results. Of course, it is a good place to create an impression for the future.
“I want to play well and help the team, but also improve myself as a footballer and get better individually.
“I am a striker, and I can play up front by myself or with other players. Since the very early stages in my career, I have played in many different positions, it depends on where they need me.”
It is perhaps more likely that Rodriguez will start on the bench at home to Paul Lambert’s Blackburn Rovers this weekend, but he will play his part in the coming month, with the hope of doing enough to extend that deal until the end of the season at the very least.
