Mansfield Town: 5 match ban takes the p**s

Paula Radcliffe’s unscheduled ‘pit-stop’ during the London Marathon in 2005 made her into something of a media cause célèbre. Squatting mid-run, Radcliffe relieved herself in front of the cameras and the watching millions from a worldwide television audience.

Whilst the act may have been the same, the reaction hasn’t for Mansfield Town centre forward Adi Yussuf, according the The Herald, after he relieved himself during the February 13 game against Plymouth Argyle. Zanzibar-born Yussuf, who came through the ranks of Premier League leaders Leicester, was caught short during the Argyle game and decided to take a leak.

Following the advice of Plymouth substitutes and an Argyle steward, the unfortunate Yussuf snuck off the pitch to relieve himself and, as a result, has now copped a five-match ban and a £700 fine to boot.

After allegedly being directed by Plymouth Argyle substitutes and a steward to behins a stand, the unfortunate Mansfield player was like a Stag in the headlights as he emptied his bladder in front of shocked, disabled Plymouth supporters.

The player was reported by an Argyle fan in the Disabled Access area who, at the time in a statement to the club said, “During the first half of the match Mansfield substitute Adi Yussuf was warming up on the touchline right in front of the disabled zone (where I sit with my friend). He said something to Plymouth Argyle substitutes Rooney and Purrington before walking over to the piece of disused land between the disabled zone and the Devonport End and took a wee. This was right in front of everyone in the Disabled section. Myself and the lady who works in the refreshments area witnessed it as well as some others and we reported it to the stewards. They later took a statement and reported it to the Referee.”

Whilst not condoing the act from Yussuf, Stags boss Adam Murray spoke about the length of the ban saying, “It must be re-emphasised the club would never support this type of action. Adi has been disciplined by the club, fully reminded of his responsibilities in no uncertain terms and warned of his future conduct in such circumstances. However, the punishment, in my view, is harsh and very disappointing. It will obviously have a knock-on effect heading into our remaining 11 matches in our bid for a play-off place and will limit our attacking options.”
