Freedman confirms Forest sign ex-Man Utd striker

Speaking at his press briefing ahead of this weekend’s clash with Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest manager Dougie Freedman has confirmed to the Nottingham Post that the club have signed Federico Macheda on loan from Cardiff City.

The City Ground club still await international clearance before he can make his debut for the club. However the club are hopeful of him being involved in their Championship encounter this weekend. If not, he’ll certainly appear at Hull City next Tuesday.

The former Manchester United striker has struggled for game time at the Cardiff City Stadium in recent times. This season he has only featured in six Championship matches, all as a substitute. The last time he started a match was the January FA Cup home defeat to Shrewsbury Town. Last season he scored six goals for the Bluebirds, the first of which came against his new team; Nottingham Forest.

Following an injury to striker Nelson Oliveira, Forest had been searching for a new striker to act as cover as they are yet to discover the true extent of the problem. Nevertheless, Freedman confirmed at a press conference that he has got his man,

“Macheda has signed… We are now waiting on international clearance. He is a player who is capable of scoring goals.
“We are waiting to find out how bad Oliveira’s injury. But they are different players.”

Macheda earned his claim to fame whilst appearing in the Manchester United first team and scoring the winning goal deep into added time against Aston Villa in 2009. Win the Red Devils 2-1 behind, he came off the bench to seal a 3-2 win at Old Trafford. However a string of injury problems made it hard for the Italian to build upon that moment of glory.

Several loan moves from Old Trafford came and went, before he took the plunge and left permanently when joining Cardiff City, then managed by Ole Gunnar Solksjaer in 2014.
