Speaking to the BBC, Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson has slammed the conduct of opponents Wolverhampton Wanderers after last night’s 2-1 away defeat at Molineux. Johnson criticised the ‘unsporting behaviour’ of Wolves in the build-up to Matt Doherty’s last minute winning goal.
Bristol City went down to a 2-1 defeat, conceding deep into added time. Johnson felt that Wolves should have kicked the ball back to goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell after Luke Freeman went down with an injury. Instead, Wolves returned the ball out for a throw near the corner flag.
The resulting throw in led to a free kick being conceded by the Robins, which ultimately led to Doherty creeping in at the far post to score a very, very late winning goal.
The whole scenario has angered Johnson, insisting that a big club such as Wolverhampton Wanderers should resort to such measures, no matter what the circumstances are in the game,
“I’m an angry man at the moment if I’m honest, for a number of reasons.
“A big club like this, you don’t expect a historic club to have to resort to unsporting behaviour.
“The lad said he was going to kick it back to the goalkeeper and he smashes it out right in our corner and puts us under pressure.”
On the flip side, Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett said that he couldn’t quite understand why Johnson is reacting in the manner that he has done. The former Millwall boss says that he is essentially making a big deal out of nothing,
“He (Johnson) was unhappy on the sidelines definitely. I wasn’t quite sure what the expectation was.
“The ball went out for a throw-in quite deep. It is splitting hairs really.”
The defeat leaves Bristol City in 20th place in the Sky Bet Championship, just two points above the relegation zone. Rotherham and MK Dons, the two sides directly below them in the table, both picked up points last night to close the gap. Johnson felt his side deserved more at Molineux on Tuesday night, but that is now three defeats in four. Wolves jumped into the top half with the three points, bouncing back after Friday’s defeat to Middlesbrough.
