What is going on at Peterborough?

At the turn of the year, Peterborough United found themselves in 6th place in the League One table, and one of the favourites for promotion.

Just two months later, Peterborough sit in 16th place, just 10 points clear of the drop zone.

Five league defeats in a row has ended Posh’s promotion hopes, and now they’re being made to look over their shoulder towards the dreaded drop zone.

Peterborough’s 3-1 defeat at Bury this evening piled on the misery for boss Graham Westley, who had enjoyed a brilliant first few months at the helm at the ABAX.

Defeats away at Gillingham, Millwall and Bury as well as home defeats against Burton and Swindon has left many Posh fans bewildered as to what has gone wrong at the League One Club.

Defensively, Posh look shaky and haven’t kept a clean sheet since mid January.

Up top, Posh are struggling to create anything. The sale of Conor Washington to QPR in January has left Posh without a class finisher.

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony signed several new players in January, including strikers Shaquille Coulthirst and Tom Nicholls, but all of the new signings have struggled to make an immediate impact.

All Posh fans were optimistic for the rest of the season following their penalty shootout defeat in the FA Cup against West Brom, but the club are yet to register a point since that match.

It seems like it will be too late to mount any sort of challenge this season, but it’s essential for the club that they remain in League One.

Worries remain about losing big players, especially if the end of the season is anything like it’s been the last few weeks.

Midfielders Chris Forrester and Marcus Maddison have both attracted attention from Championship clubs Reading and Leeds respectively.

It doesn’t get any easier for Posh who face an inform Wigan side at the DW stadium on Saturday.
