Wolves match winner ‘never doubted himself’

Wolves midfielder George Saville has insisted that he never doubted himself during a difficult period, reports the BBC.

The 22 year old scored his first two goals for the club in Saturday’s 2-1 win over promotion chasing Derby County.

The ex Chelsea trainee has had a tough time since leaving the Premier League giants in 2014.

However, a recent loan spell to League One side Millwall has brought him back into favour at Molineux and he has taken his chance.

Saville said: “I’ve never doubted myself. I have great support around me.”

“I know it’s a cliché but you can’t do it without support. That comes from your family and your friends. They’re pushing me and helping me through the tough times.”

Saville’s double came in only his 16th appearance for Wolves, despite having signed for the club two summers ago.

He was kept sidelined last season by the tactical shape of the side, as well as the form of Kevin McDonald and Jack Price.

After being dropped to the bench for the midweek defeat to Brentford, Saville shone as he bagged both goals in Wolves first win in eight matches.

Saville has also spent time on loan in the past, with his first major spell being at Brentford, when he was still on the books of Chelsea.

Since signing for Wolves, he has spent time on loan at Bristol City and Millwall.

He was recalled from his Millwall loan spell at the start of February and although injuries played a part in that, he has responded well since returning to Molineux.

He told BBC Sport: “It’s been a tough year going out on loan twice and thinking you’re not good enough to get into the team, but you have to be mentally strong.”

“You have to block a few things out. You’ve got to stay strong, keep working hard and anything can happen. I’ve played a few games now and hopefully showed the supporters what I’m capable of.

“We were poor against Brentford on Tuesday, nobody’s hiding away from that. We’ve had a tough patch, when we’ve lost games maybe we shouldn’t have lost and drawn games when we probably could have stolen a win, but we’ve stuck together as a team.

“The goal settled us down and and we pushed on from there with grit, determination and hard work off the ball. That’s what we have to do.”
