Preview: Wigan v Bury – Fourth time lucky

This fixture is, on the face of it, a routine home win for the side currently sitting second in League One. Delve a little deeper and the points aren’t Wigan Athletic’s just yet.

The two Lancashire clubs have met three times so far this season, from which Bury remain undefeated – boasting an aggregate scoreline of 8-3 over the Latics.

A 4-0 FA Cup win for The Shakers at Gigg Lane back in November was the last of these meetings.

Since then Wigan have lost just twice in the league. However, this is something the visitors will look upon with optimism. Both of these defeats were 1-0 losses at the DW Stadium, coming against Burton Albion and Blackpool respectively.

Not to mention, it was only two weeks ago that Oldham managed to come away from the DW with a 0-0 draw.

Gary Caldwell’s side may be unbeaten in their last 11, but a well organised defence with a clinical strike force can bring his team to their knees.

Whether Bury are the team to halt Wigan’s title charge remains to be seen. Recent away trips suggest otherwise.

David Flitcroft has seen his side humiliated this month with a 3-0 defeat at Barnsley followed up by a 6-0 thrashing at Coventry City.

These away day blues were followed up with three matches at Gigg Lane, from which Flitcroft’s team emerged with seven points.

Fourteenth placed Bury will be looking towards top scorer Leon Clarke to add to his tally of 13 for league campaign and inflict more misery on his former club.

Clarke struck twice for Bury in the League Cup on his return to Wigan earlier this season, more than he managed during 10 appearances for the Latics in 2014-15.

Kevin McNaughton (hamstring) could return to Wigan’s matchday squad whilst Yanic Wildschut may come in on the wing for Ryan Colclough. Wildschut scored an injury time winner at Walsall last weekend after replacing Colclough who has failed to make an impression since joining from Crewe Alexandra last month.
