Heckingbottom delighted with derby day success

Barnsley Caretaker Manager Paul Heckingbottom was delighted with his side after they secured a fifth straight home league win by recording a 1-0 victory over local rivals Doncaster Rovers according to the Doncaster Free Press.

In a tight South Yorkshire derby at Oakwell, youngster Ashley Fletcher scored the only goal of the match nine minutes from time when Rovers keeper Thorsten Stuckmann spilt a Conor Hourihane effort into Fletcher’s path for the player to tap in from close range.

After another solid home showing from The Tykes Caretaker Manager Paul Heckingbottom declared his delight at his side’s latest home victory.

“We definitely deserved it,” Heckingbottom told the Doncaster Free Press.

“I felt we should have been in front at half time, but speaking to the lads at half time, we felt we had not shown the quality that we have got in the final third.”

“We had great opportunities, some of which didn’t even result in shots. We got in good positions, without making the most of them. We wanted to be more clinical.”

“In the second half, we were still a little bit wasteful and had to wait until the last ten or fifteen minutes to get our winner.”

“I felt the winner would come,” Heckingbottom confessed.

“We felt we were on top and we were trying to stress that to the players in terms of the substitutions we made and the information we were giving them. It was all about being positive and going for it.”

“Sometimes you have to be happy with a point but we felt we were in the ascendancy and we had to push for the winning goal and luckily, we got it.”

Barnsley are in League 1 action again on Tuesday evening when they travel to Gigg Lane to face Bury.
