Owls boss fumes at Forestieri dismissal

Sheffield Wednesday Manager Carlos Carvalhal was frustrated with the red card shown to top scorer Fernando Forestieri in the second half of yesterday’s 1-0 defeat at improving Preston North End according to the Sheffield Star.

Referee Keith Stroud dismissed The Owls attacker for a second bookable offence in the 66th minute of the Deepdale clash and Preston North End’s winning goal came just 7 minutes after Forestieri’s dismissal when Joe Garner headed Calum Woods’ cross beyond Wednesday keeper Kieren Westwood.

While Carvalhal did not dispute his player’s second booking The Owls boss did feel that the referee got the decision which led to the player’s first caution wrong.

“Forestieri received the ball in a good position and the defence blocked him and the referee gave him a yellow card (for diving), so the first yellow is not correct,” Carvalhal told the Sheffield Star.

“The second yellow seems correct. Even though he doesn’t touch the ball he’s tried to put his hand on the ball and the referee therefore was correct.”

“The first yellow card is unbelievable because it was a clear foul to us and he gives a yellow to Fernando. If he doesn’t go down he will be in front of goal in the area with a very clear chance to score. For me he didn’t dive in that moment because if he did it was not a good choice. He blocked him.”

Sheffield Wednesday remain in the Play Off positions following yesterday’s defeat and face a home fixture against QPR at Hillsborough on Tuesday evening.
