Bullard big thanks to Hull City

Jimmy Bullard is a man laughing all the way to the bank, according to a report in today’s Daily Mirror.

The outspoken, former Hull City midfielder tells the Mirror that his life has changed for the better after the East Yorkshire club handed him “millions of pounds” due to a typographical error in the first contract that he signed.

Hull City, currently flying high in the Championship, were in their first ever Premier League campaign when they signed Bullard from Fulham for a fee of £5m, a then club record fee. Bullard penned a four-and-a-half-year contract worth £40,000-a-week, or so he thought.

Bullard, speaking on his Magic Sponge podcast admitted that he was over the moon with the £40,000-a-week deal and went to sign it with his agent and father, the midfielder admitting it was a ‘blinding contract.’ Bullard then says that he noticed the ‘typo’, a gaffe that he simply couldn’t believe.

Bullard said, “I’ve gone to sign it, I see on the paperwork it says £50,000. So I’ve passed it under the table to my agent, my agent’s gone: ‘yeah, that’s a misprint, sign it.’” That wasn’t all that was on the contract that made Jimy Bullard scribble his signature and blow the ink dry in a hurry.

He also said that underneath the quoted £50,000-per-week figure, there was also an additional fee payable as part of the contract for what essentially was ‘appearance money.’ Bullard then said, “As I’ve signed it, I blew it dry, and then I read under it as well, another £5000 or £6000 appearance, whatever it was. And he’s said: ‘yeah, just sign it, just sign it’, and blew it dry’”

Speaking further of his good fortune, and the fact that Hull City were throwing cash around “like confetti”, Bullard had a tongue-in-cheek, humorous thankyou for the East Yorkshire side. Bullard quipped, “Amazing contract, amazing. And I’m celebrating to this f***ing day. Thank you Hull City for changing my life. I’m dropping cash everywhere, I’m bleeding cash.”

Hull City were contacted by The Mirror but were unavailable for comment.
