Lloyd Dyer

Burnley hoping to sign released Premier League winger

The Lancashire Telegraph understands that Burnley are hoping to sign Lloyd Dyer on a short-term contract. The free agent has been without a club since recently cancelling his Watford contract. However it is believed that other clubs are also in the hunt to sign him.

The 33-year-old, best known for his spell with Leicester City, spent the second half of last season on loan in the Championship with Birmingham City. Sean Dyche is said to want more cover in the wide areas in case of anymore injuries to George Boyd.

Dyer has yet to make a first-team appearance this season, having fallen out of favour at Vicarage Road following promotion to the Premier League and the change of manager. Quique Sanchez Flores told the player last summer that he wouldn’t feature in his first-team plans.

Although other clubs have shown an interest in luring him to their respective clubs, it is understood that Burnley and Dyche are the favourites to sign the pacey wide-man. Scott Arfield and George Boyd are very much the first-choice wide midfielder pairing at Turf Moor but there is only really Michael Kightly in reserve. Dyche wants to ensure all bases are covered for the final few months of the season, which could potentially include a play-off appearance.

Other clubs on Dyer’s CV include MK Dons and Millwall. He began his career with West Bromwich Albion, making his debut back in 2002. His experience would also be a big asset to Dyche, as he has won promotion out of the Championship on three occasions, with Leicester City, West Brom and most recently Watford.
