Former Premiership striker Ameobi joins League One strugglers

League One side Fleetwood Town have signed striker Shola Ameobi until the end of the season after he was released by Bolton Wanderers.

The former England U21 and Nigerian international has joined the Cod Army until the end of the season, and hopes to score the goals that keep the Fylde coast club in League One

Ameobi made 298 appearances in the Premier League for both Newcastle United and Crystal Palace and will bring bundles of experience to the Highbury stadium.

The most famous moment for the 6ft 3in striker was his goal for Newcastle in the Champions League against Barcelona.

Shola Ameobi was a regular in the Bolton squad, but was released in January due to the financial issues at the Macron stadium.

It is believed that Ameobi turned down different offers in favour of a move to the Fylde Coast and Fleetwood’s manager Steven Pressley is delighted to have the striker at the club.

He said: “In January we signed a number of younger players and it was vital to the group that we brought in a player with experience.

“We certainly couldn’t get any more experience than Shola Ameobi and we are absolutely delighted with that. He is not only a very good player; he is a terrific character that can bring a lot to the group.

“It is vital that he has been playing as sometimes unattached players at this stage in the season, the one thing they are lacking is a level of fitness.

“Shola has been involved at Bolton Wanderers on a regular basis for the vast majority of the season and he is raring to go ahead of Saturday’s trip to Port Vale.”

Ameobi spent time at Turkish side Gaziantep BB and Crystal Palace before he joined Bolton.

He will hope to make his debut for his new club at Vale Park on Saturday.
