York City fans set to complete Ride 2 Northampton

There will be cause for cheer from all sides of Sixfields before Northampton Town’s match with York City this afternoon as a group of York City fans arrive at The Cobblers home after cycling to this afternoon’s match all the way from Bootham Crescent to raise funds for The British Heart Foundation.

In January 2014, City secured a crucial league victory over The Cobblers at Sixfields but that match is remembered for an incident which was witnessed by both sets of supporters when setting off on their journeys home.

Northampton Town fan David Henderson had attended the match with family in January 2014 but suffered a heart attack following the match and sadly died. York City supporter Ian Jones attended the match that day and decided that himself and 11 other City supporters would cycle from Bootham Crescent to Sixfields to raise funds for The British Heart Foundation in Mr Henderson’s memory prior to the fixture last season.

The group did the footballing community proud after raising over £7,000 for the charity and after the success of last year’s event the group have again cycled the marathon journey this season.

Jones and his fellow cyclists left Bootham Crescent on Thursday with the aim to arrive at Sixfields before this afternoon’s 3pm kick off. The group are aiming to smash last year’s fundraising total and have already raised almost £5,000 for The British Heart Foundation this year.

Anyone who would like to make a donation to the group for their superb effort can donate online at justgiving.com/ridetonorthampton2.

The British Heart Foundation is a charity set up to tackle cardiovascular disease with the vision to live in a world in which people do not die prematurely or suffer from cardiovascular disease.

There are currently 7 million people living with cardiovascular disease in the UK. For help, information and support please visit the charity’s website at www.bhf.org.uk.
