Nathan Byrne

Wolves forward still needed despite lack of game time

Although he has been out of favour recently, Wolverhampton Wanderers utility man Nathan Byrne still has a big role to play this season. Those are the words of head coach Kenny Jackett, who was speaking to Express & Star.

Since the turn of the year, the summer signing from Swindon Town has only played seven minutes of competitive football with the Championship club, coming as a result of two brief substitute appearances. Jackett says he has ‘done nothing wrong’ and will get his opportunity.

The 23-year-old arrived at the club with a glowing reputation after his time in League One with Swindon Town. He played a big part in their run to the League One Play-Off Final last season, only for Preston North End to beat them at Wembley. The ex-Tottenham Hotspur youngster then sought pastures new and elected to link up with Jackett at Molineux. Jackett insists that he has a big future ahead of him,

“He’s been unlucky.

“We have Van La Parra and James Henry in the wide areas and generally they’ve dominated the selection.

“Nathan’s done nothing wrong, I’ve been impressed with him when he’s been in. I think he’s a young player with a very good future.”

Speaking in late 2015, Byrne accepted that he needed to work hard to win back his place in the team, especially considering the competition for places in his preferred position,

“I know that I can make a difference and can change games whether starting or coming off the bench.

“Everyone wants to be starting but I am not going to be in a strop if I don’t because there are some very good players here.

“I know that if I can keep working I can keep improving and can be a big part of the squad.”

Byrne is again expected to at least be on the bench tomorrow as Wolves travel to the Madejski Stadium to face Brian McDermott’s Reading.
