McGeady leaves Everton on loan for the Championship

Sheffield Wednesday have signed Republic of Ireland international Aiden McGeady on loan from Everton until the end of the season. After only appearing once for the Toffees so far this season, he hopes to play regular football to try and break into the Ireland Euro 2016 squad this summer.

The 29-year-old winger will certainly boost Carlos Carvalhal’s options at Hillsborough, and he will compete with the likes of Barry Bannan and Ross Wallace for a place in the Owls starting eleven.

Carvalhal revealed that he previously tried to sign McGeady during his time as Sporting Lisbon manager and believes that he has ‘a lot of quality and now looks forward to the challenge here’.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez revealed that it was a sensible move for all concerned and expects him to return ready to compete for a place in the team,

“Aiden needs to play and it’s a really good opportunity for him to do that in a very demanding fixture list for a team that can get a really good tempo into Aiden for the Euros.

“That will make sure he comes back having had a good period of football and of having an impact.”

It remains to be seen if the paperwork went through in time for McGeady to play in tomorrow’s league clash at home to Burnley. If not, then he would make his debut this coming weekend away to another promotion contender, Birmingham City.
