Welsh international set for Cardiff loan

The Lancashire Telegraph understands that Championship side Cardiff City are set to sign Tom Lawrence on loan from Leicester City. His loan deal at Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers came to an end this weekend and the Welshman is now set to head out on a temporary deal once again.

The two-cap Wales international, who turned 22 in January, is closing in on a move to the Cardiff City Stadium as he looks to play regular first-team football ahead of the European Championship in France this summer.

Rovers boss Paul Lambert confirmed following the 3-0 away victory over League Two side Oxford United in the FA Cup at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday that Lawrence was set to depart Ewood Park,

“Tom is going back. As I said at the time it was always going to be a dangerous thing because his agent wanted this one-month thing. It was never going to work.

“Tom wants to exercise it, he’s got the Euros to think of, and he’s probably seen Tony come in and thought maybe that’s his chance gone.

“But credit to him for the way he played when he came on and he goes away with big thanks from ourselves because he gave us everything and that’s testament to himself.”

Cardiff City manager Russell Slade is expected to be busy on this transfer deadline day, despite the club being in a transfer embargo. However there is room for movement in the market and Lawrence looks set to be one of the new faces coming through the door, as they aim to close the gap on the play-off places.
