Wycombe Wanderers beat Plymouth Argyle with help from 46 year old veteran

Plymouth Argyle have been excellent at Home Park this season and prior to yesterday’s match with Wycombe Wanderers The Pilgrims had the record of netting in every home league match.

The Chairboys promised to provide a stern test for high flying Arygle having forced their way back into the Play Off picture in recent weeks after a return to form.

Wycombe Wanderers opened the scoring after just three minutes at Home Park when young striker Gozie Ugwu netted from point blank range. The early drama continued when minutes later Wanderers’ number one goalkeeper Alex Lynch suffered a match ending injury. With former keeper Matt Ingram having left the club to join QPR last week Lynch’s injury forced The Chairboys to field 46 year old veteran goalkeeper Barry Richardson who is currently the club’s Goalkeeping Coach.

Richardson’s appearance was his first since appearing for Doncaster Rovers in a Football League Trophy match back in November 2005 but the veteran proved to be the hero of the day for Wycombe Wanderers as he prevented Argyle from extending their goalscoring record to ensure that The Chairboys travelled back to Buckinghamshire with a well earned three points.

In truth, the veteran keeper was rarely troubled at Home Park and with number one Lynch seemingly out of action for the foreseeable future Manager Gareth Ainsworth is likely to recruit another goalkeeper before next weekend’s match with Luton Town.
