Sheffield Wednesday loan deal for Premier League McGeady

Everton were thought to be keen to let the Republic of Ireland international go out on loan for the rest of the season, the 29-year-old having only played 45 minutes of football for the Toffeemen this season – in a Capital One Cup tie against Barnsley at Oakwell.

With a place in the Republic of Ireland’s Euro 2016 side at stake, McGeady was thought to be reticent at dropping down from the Premier League to the Championship in case it jeopardised his chances, this seems to not be the case with the current news. As Sky Sports report via their ‘sources’, “Everton have agreed to loan winger Aiden McGeady to Sheffield Wednesday until the end of the season.”

This move will provide the Owls with another attacking threat to run alongside the poise of Fernando Forestieri and goal-scoring prowess of new signing Gary Hooper, McGeady being a useful foil to have as Wednesday push for the play-off places and a crack at the Premier League.

McGeady, who once commanded an £8.4m transfer fee when he moved from Celtic to Spartak Moscow in 2010, will be looking for game time in the remaining three months as he pushes on towards bigger things over the summer months. He becomes the third Premier League signing to arrive at Sheffield Wednesday after the aformentioned permanent transfer of Gary Hooper from Norwich City and full back Joe Bennett from Aston Villa.
