Tom Cairney

Ajax linked to shock move for Championship midfielder

Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney is a surprise transfer target for Dutch and European giants Ajax. That is the news from talkSPORT, who revealed that sources in Holland are suggesting that the current Eredivisie leaders and hoping to make the former Hull City and Blackburn Rovers man as their latest signing.

Get West London understands that a move is quite unlikely to happen, but it is believed that scouts have been sent over to monitor his progress. Slavisa Jokanovic is desperately to ensure no more players leave the club this month, with Ross McCormack and Moussa Dembele heavily linked with moves away.

The Craven Cottage club paid a cool £4million to lure him away from Blackburn over the summer. Over the past two seasons Cairney has played under an incredibly SIX managers at two clubs. Something which he says takes time to get used to,

“It’s good to get peoples ideas and coaching – but it’s tough. It just feels like the norm, and in that instance (of having minimal effect), yeah.”

In a few weeks time, Cairney will go back to Ewood Park with his current club, assuming Ajax don’t enter with a late bid. The player himself says he has learned a lot about the game at this level, insisting that the Championship is a ‘horrible’ league,

“I’ve learned a lot about the Championship,

“It’s a relentless league. No, it’s horrible, especially on a Tuesday night away from home.

“But I think I played my best football at Blackburn, and I never thought I would be able to play on the wing, but I did when I was with them and now at Fulham.”

It has been a tough season for Fulham but Cairney will not only be hoping that the Cottagers avoid relegation, but that they also don’t change manager again!
